兰金大厅

Originally constructed in 1906, 兰金大厅 underwent major renovations in 2018 to reconfigure the historic structure into a modern facility, ready to meet the needs of Carroll's newest generation of students. 作为第三个, 和 final piece of the multi-phase plan to improve academic spaces on campus, 威尼斯游戏大厅's Board of Trustees authorized 1100万美元 for improvements. Most of the upgrades were confined to the building's interior because of the historic-nature of the building. 兰金大厅 was rededicated on Sept. 14, 2018 和 now houses nine technology-infused classrooms, a number of student spaces 和 25 offices for faculty predominantly in 环境科学, 心理学生物学. 威尼斯游戏大厅 was honored with the 2019 George Gunn Award for Excellence in Architectural Preservation 和 Historic Restoration from the City of 沃基肖 L和marks Commission for the restoration of 兰金大厅.

兰金重生

“Demolishing 兰金 was never a consideration. Renovating 和 restoring it to a modern academic building serves as a perfect symbol for Carroll. We are a University rich in history but we have continued to evolve through the years to remain current...Our campus has a wonderful mix of old 和 new buildings. 兰金 sits prominently now along with our three other historic buildings, as a reminder of our proud heritage.”

关于沃尔特·L. 兰金

沃尔特·兰金肖像

兰金大厅 is named after Carroll’s second president, Dr. 沃尔特·L. 兰金. He served Carroll for nearly 40 years beginning in 1866. 出生在阿拉哈巴德,1841年的印度, where his father was a missionary, 兰金 和 his family came to America in 1848. He graduated from Princeton University in 1860 at the age of 19. Following college, he taught school in Elizabeth, N.J. 和 studied law, before being asked to serve at Carroll.

兰金 was a tireless promoter 和 fundraiser, gradually increasing enrollment 和 the college’s stature. 他儿时的朋友, 拉尔夫vooorhees, along with his wife Elizabeth, were prominent supporters of a number of religiously-based colleges, 卡罗尔包括. The Voorhees’ donations funded the construction of three buildings on campus, including 兰金大厅. The facility originally housed chemistry, 生物学, geology 和 physics laboratories 和 classrooms. 从那时起, it has been home to many academic programs, 包括教育, 宗教, history 和 modern languages. At one time, the Carrier Memorial 图书馆 was housed on the top floor of the building.

项目背景

兰金大厅 has stood proudly at Carroll since 1906, when the institution was only 60 years old. It is one of four historic buildings, 包括正厅, Ganfield Gymnasium 和 Voorhees Hall, to have lent the campus charm 和 remind us of the university’s long heritage. But a building designed for the education of college students in 1906 was not exactly ideal for 2018 or beyond. 教室拥挤不堪, bathrooms seriously outdated 和 the building infrastructure not well suited for a modern, wired educational facility.

Carroll’s board of trustees developed an 1100万美元 renovation plan for 兰金大厅 as the final act in a trio of major construction projects on campus, following the building of the Michael 和 Mary Jaharis Science Laboratories道格和南希·哈斯德·霍尔. While the exterior of the building was left largely intact to comply with historical preservation guidelines, 工作人员将内部掏空, installed new heating 和 cooling systems 和 created new classrooms, offices 和 numerous informal open gathering spaces where students can study 和 socialize.

Those informal gathering spaces are important, noted Carroll President Cindy Gnadinger. “Today, we know more about what works in education 和 that learning is a collaborative process. We wanted to ensure in this building that we created spaces where students could collaborate, 彼此之间, 或者是教职员工. 说到教员, the remodeled building contains numerous faculty offices, a decision made to ensure students would have greater access to faculty.”
